About the artist
Natalie Lennard, alias Miss Aniela, is a UK-based photographer of art, advertising, and the new genre called surreal fashion. Mixing art and fashion, she creates a beautiful balance of contemporary creativity, working closely with producer & partner Matthew Lennard on the production of commercial assignments, fine-art projects, and photography events.
Her work centers on a fusion of traditional imagery and digitally enhanced motifs, interweaving in a surreal composition. Natalie's work has been exhibited by the Saatchi Gallery, Photo Vogue Milan, Prins Eugens Waldermarsudde Museum in Stockholm and the Houses of Parliament. Her work were featured by BBC, El Pais, Plastik Magazine, Yahoo and NY Arts.
Miss Aniela or the construction of magic photographies
She studied English, and Media at the University of Sussex. She has started photography by making a lot of self-portraits which gave her an experience about the colors she loves, compositions, form, lighting mood; it educated her a lot about photography and her universe. She was not aware of her universe at this time and did not know that she would focus on Fashion and especially Surreal Fashion!
To create her Surreal Fashion Photography, Natalie is inspired a lot by painters like Salvador Dali or Magritte, playing with the boundaries between photos and paintings, cartoons or photos from other scenes, bringing the outdoors into the indoors for example. All her shots are not always full of Photoshop and Compositing works; she also likes producing simpler fashion photos that have a subtler surrealism in just presenting the model as other-worldly as she can look for instance.
Nowadays, Natalie works also on more commercial shooting and some advertising. Her good communication and the strong community of fans on platforms like Flickr made her famous: "All I did in my early years was just share it, nothing fancy until I started to get offered and respond to opportunities for further publicity", she says. "Your work is your best promotion".
She also wrote two books: Self-Portrait Photography and Creative Portrait Photography which are semi-educational, partly showcase.
